In an earlier post by Lara, she mentioned her hair removal adventure and I know everyone is eager for that update. So here goes. Sunday afternoon, we set up a chair in the bathroom and invited her mom and Kerry to watch. After Lara put her hair in a ponytail, I braided it for her…as I have so many times before our many moto rides. Then Kerry handed me the garden shears. Not only is such a tool fitting for this earth mama, but they’re also the sharpest scissors in the house! By the way, it’s extremely poignant knowing that you’re braiding your girl’s hair for the last time. You want to make it last without becoming overly maudlin.

Next, I removed the braid in a few cuts, showed it to her, and Lara and I had our moment. Those of you who have known Lara the longest know that aside from her endless kindness, her long hair is pretty much her signature feature. We also let her mom snip a lock as a keepsake.

After Carol had her lock of hair, I took the clippers and trimmed the rest down to about a quarter of an inch, being careful not to slip on the mountain of hair at my feet. Lara’s reactions to the process were moving. Her eyes and her smile lit up in the mirror while she watched. Her laughter and banter softened my heart. I have always loved her hair, but holy shit was she gorgeous without any!

This is one way my peaceful warrior can stand up to stage IV cancer. She is in control of removing her hair. And adenocarcinoma won’t take away her dignity or poise. Not only did she want to be in control, it was important to her that she give me her hair while it was still thick and luscious. She loves the outcome. It’s less to manage and she rocks it like the badass she is!
